American recording artist Ethan Randall has released three studio albums, two remix albums, one live album and twenty-six singles (including six as a featured artist). Since the beginning of his career in 2008, Ethan has sold over 50 million records, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time. He has released three platinum and multi-platinum certified albums, having totaled sales over 14 million copies. Sixteen of Ethan's singles have reached number one on the Arena Sound 30, making him the act with the most number one songs on the chart.

Ethan made his chart debut in November 2008 with "Monster", featuring Brandon Key, which reached the number one position in a matter of weeks. It was followed by the release of his debut studio album, One Night Only (2009), which debuted atop the album chart. Ethan's second studio album Risky Business (2010) produced a record six chart-topping singles: "Puttin' It On (Like a Tease)", "Sex in the Sky", "Animals", "Drown Me Out", "Summer Girl" and "Angels". The album became a record-breaking success, selling nearly 6 million units and winning the 2nd Annual Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Ethan made guest appearances on tracks by Diamond and Shenelle during the Risky Business era, the top five singles "Heartbreak 102" and "I'm Crazy/I'm Sexy". Chromosome X (2012), Ethan's third studio album, became his third consecutive number-one album, debuting with his highest first-week sales with 588,000 copies sold. The album's lead single "808" became a massive commercial success, peaking at number one and became his best-selling and fastest-selling single at the time, with over 3.2 million downloads. Ethan made a guest appearance on Cheyenne Jamison's "Here I Stand", which became his eleventh number-one, followed by two other singles from Chromosome X, "Kiss Me Dead" and "Frequency", becoming his twelfth and thirteenth number-one singles.

The commercial and critical success of Chromosome X led to the release of a deluxe version entitled Chromosome X: Metamorphosis, with an extended play simply called Metamorphosis being released as an eight-track extended play. The set continued the R&B styling of its parent album and featured two released singles, "Metamorphosis" and "Come Into the Light", featuring Cheyenne Jamison. The singles, while Platinum successes, ultimately broke Ethan's record-consecutive streak of number-one singles of thirteen, beginning with "Monster" (2008) to "Frequency" (2012). "Metamorphosis" peaked at number-two on the Sound 30 chart, whilst "Come Into the Light" became his lowest-peaking single to date at number-five. Despite this, Metamorphosis and "Come Into the Light" both received a Grammy nomination each at the 2015 ceremony.

After momentum of Chromosome X: Metamorphosis died down in the New Year (2013), Ethan dedicated his time on collaborative singles. In March 2013, it was announced Ethan and American pop singer Michaela would team up on the track "Heartbreakers", for her third album Softcore. The track was an immediate, number-one success, selling 480,000 downloads in one-week and later being nominated for Best Music Video at the 2015 Grammys. Ethan would appear alongside Terra that same month in "Dorothy", a promotional track for her comeback extended play, Where the Wild Things Are, garnering the duet a 2015 Grammy nomination for Best Pop/Duo Group Performance.

In June 2013, after much silence over his own music career, Ethan surprised fans with the release of track "Army of Two". It opened up with 455,000 downloads in its first week, immediately landing Ethan his fifteenth number-one single. The track went on to become his best-selling single to date with 3.6 million copies, whilst earning Grammy nominations for Best Pop Solo Performance and Best Music Video. The next month, Ethan appeared with rapper J ROC on the track "Mankind" which opened with 262,000 downloads. After an immense amount of longevity, the tracked topped the charts in September 2013, giving J ROC his first and Ethan his sixteenth, and sold over 3.3 million downloads. The track earned two Grammy nominations for the 2015 ceremony.

Ethan announced his fourth studio album would be entitled Escapades with the release of "Army of Two", though industry hiccups have seen the album forcefully postponed through 2013-2014. A second single "Vanity", featuring J ROC, had been previously announced in 2014, managing to chart on Sound 30 and subsequent airplay charts before the industry faulted again.

On February 23, 2015, Ethan returned to the limelight announcing Escapades would be released in three days on February 26, surprising fans.
